The Music, Dance and Instruments of the Pennsylvania Germans by Keith A. Brintzenhoff, Musician and Folklorist of Kutztown. The Pennsylvania German community has a rich tradition of music and dance, and Keith Brintzenhoff, a musician and folklorist, will explain the roles that the guitar, harmonica, mountain dulcimer, banjo and autoharp play in that tradition as he plays them himself. Audience members will be taught about Hoedowning and the fancy footwork of Jigging, and through dance, songs and stories will explore social aspects of the Pennsylvanian Germans. German American Essay Contest

The German Heritage Society of the Susquehanna Valley is proud to sponsor the second annual German-American Day Contest to further support the study of Pennsylvania's German American heritage. The topic of the 2007 contest will be "Celebrating Our German Heritage Today." All high school age students enrolled in German during the 2007 - 2008 school year at Selinsgrove Area High School, Shikellamy High School and Midd-West High School are eligible to submit a project for consideration. Essays will be judged by the officers of the German Heritage Society and two monetary prizes of $75 and one year student memberships will be awarded to the two projects judged to best embody this year's theme. Two honorable mentions will receive $25 monetary prizes and one-year student memberships to the German Heritage Society. This theme may be incorporated into a project of the student's choosing, including poster, essay, creative writing, photographic essay, or video. Videos should be no more than 15 minutes in length. All papers should be no more than 3 pages but at least 2 pages, double spaced with one inch margins using 12 pt Times New Roman font. All sources should be documented on a Works Cited page. Deadline for papers is 26 October 2007. Papers should be submitted to your German teacher who will forward them to the German Heritage Society. The winners will be publicized in conjunction with German American Day.
